We reviewed the available scientific literature on wine and health, excluding the studies that disagreed with our thesis.
Science is complicated. The relationship between wine and health is more complicated. We have done our best to summarize the former in a way that clearly supports the latter.
Resveratrol: The Compound in Question
Resveratrol is a polyphenol found in red grape skins. It has been studied for its potential antioxidant properties. The studies are promising in mice and inconclusive in humans. We are choosing to interpret "inconclusive" as "possibly very good."
The French Paradox
The French Paradox refers to the observation that French people, who consume significant quantities of saturated fat and red wine, have historically lower rates of cardiovascular disease than populations eating similarly. Multiple explanatory factors have been proposed. We are going with wine.
The available evidence neither confirms nor denies that a glass of Burgundy with dinner is good for your heart. We have decided this is close enough.
Our Conclusion
Moderation is recommended by everyone and practiced by no one who is interesting at a dinner party. One glass with a good cheese is, in our editorial judgment, good for you. This is not medical advice. Please consult your physician, and perhaps bring them a bottle.
